Transformer regular maintenance routine

08/11/2010 2:01 AM

What kind of routine are you following for regular maintenance/inspection on your hermetically sealed transformers?

We are doing monthly routine inspections for leakages, and bushing cleaning and connection tightness.

dear,

this is a new concept, where there is not a regular periodic maintenance is required.

But, innovations & new ideas for reliability & life improvements, there is no end.

If the size of transformer is high , say more then 1 MVA, you may install the on line monitoring equipment of the transformer, that checks continuously

1. Oil gases - degradation of oil with time, which takes more then 5 years, if it is oil filled

2. Gas pressure, if it is SF6 Gas filled

3. Winding temperature rise

4. Earth leakages in winding

5. Insulation levels in Meg Ohms

If its hermetically sealed your doing more harm than good regular inspections degrade the seals. Again if hermetically sealed why do you need to clean the bushings ? ? ? There should be no ingress of contaminants

As to checking the tightness of the conections, are you using a touque wrench ? ? ? If not you will cause more damage due to stretching the conection bolts.

Our transformers are located outdoor where the atmosphere is highly polluted. So the bushings (which are exposed to the atmosphere) are observed monthly and also the transformer as a whole is inspected for any oil leakages.

Connection tightness is a routine inspection job where we are not really torquing the bolts. Connections are marked where the torquing was done the last time and it is inspected visually. You can check the tightness with hand or with any tool just to make sure nothing is really loose.

Hi

You've covered it, you cannot do any more on your transformers than you are already doing.

Just be careful when checking the connections that you do not over tighten and/or put a strain on the connection, I think you mean you are cleaning the insulator bushes, which is a good thing, just use a clean cloth or brush... DO NOT use cleaning chemicals, they attract even more dirt, and continue to check for those leaks
