Puzzle

08/12/2010 5:05 AM

you have 16 cards, one number is printed on each card .

16 numbers on 16 cards are:

1,1,1,1,3,3,3,3 ,5,5,5,5 & 9,9,9,9

(4 cards with number 1, four with3, four with 5 and 4 with 9...)

you have to choose 6 cards such that sum of all numbers on these 6 cards will be equal to 21.

which cards you will choose?

there is no other restriction on choosing card.

Any sum of six odd numbers will be even, therefore it's impossible.

Now you are getting an idea of the calibre of some of the CR4 members....their IQ, CQ and experience is why i am an addict.

You should try some stiffer challenges maybe.. will take few more milliseconds for them to answer i hope.

Here is one feeble example.

"There is a sphere. A through-hole 6" long is drilled in it on a diameter. What is the volume of the material left? No other data is given."

Those who are fans of Martin Gardner, please wait for a lesser mortal to answer please, will you ?

Me sir, me sir, I think I know, but I'll wait and see if I'm right, meanwhile I'll entertain myself with a ball of string and a paper bag.

Re: PUZZLE

Good morning kvsridhar.

I'll make a feeble attempt:

With a sphere radius=3 and a hole that would make 0 volume removed (i.e. a hole of length 6 and diameter 0). With nothing removed, the remaining volume is the original volume: (4Π/3) R3.

Thus, 36Π.

Awesome .. as expected. 10 millliseconds by my grandfather clock.

If i recall right, among the thousands of correct answers which came to Martin, this was unique....lateral thinking... would have warmed the cockles of the heart (is that the right expression?) of Edward de Bono....

Cheers.

Let us not say something as mundane as put 9 upside down (to make it 6) it really doesn't you know.

Re: Puzzle

you have to choose 6 cards such that sum of all numbers on these 6 cards will be equal to 21

Is there something I am missing, even if 6 of the cards instead of 4 were printed with "1,1,1,1" the sum of 6 x (1+1+1+1) = 24, which is greater than the target of 21.

<hmm>

Perhaps sanimisra meant that we could use addition AND subtraction AND Division AND Multiplication to get or final answer of 21 with 4 cards (as Del has said in post #1 the sum of every individual card is an even number).

Re: Puzzle

Post 3 gave the hint. Turn three 9's upside-down; 6+6+6+1+1+1 = 21.

(That's the gimmick answer. The legitimate answer is that it's impossible.)

Here's another cute one. Take an 8x8 array of squares and removed two squares from diagonally opposite corners, leaving 62 squares. Now use 31 dominoes (each the size of two adjacent squares) to cover the 62 squares.
