No. It is common for vertical compressors to also use rider rings.
Vertical compressors can be designed without rider rings as they do not have to support the mass of the piston and rod and rely on the sealing rings to centralise the piston in the cylinder.
It is most unusual to find a horizontal compressor without rider rings.
There are also a number of vertical compressors that use neither rings nor rider rings, but rely on a labyrinth type finish on the piston to provide both sealing and centralization of the piston in the cylinder.
