Laptops are more expensive, more difficult to upgrade and limited in what hardware they can support (especially graphics cards and screen sizes). The only real advantage they have is portability. Do you really need a laptop or would a desktop computer be acceptable for you?

Additionally what graphic designer software program are you planning on using?

The software recommended specifications are a good place to start to help decide exactly how powerful your computer system needs to at least be. From there you can decide how much more you are willing to spend to upgrade specifications to help optimise the computers performance and future-proof it so it will provide many years of useful and productive service.

From the Autodesk website

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?siteID=123112&id=13571366

For the 32 bit version, a standard off-the-shelf PC will work but you should concentrate on making sure you have lots of RAM (4GB) and a good graphics card with 1GB of RAM or more and capable of DirectX 10 as these are the key elements that will slow the Autodesk program down if you don't meet or exceed the recommended program hardware requirements. It should be possible to get this in a Laptop form but it is going to be expensive.

As for where to get the computer, well a good place to start is the Dell computer website. As an added advantage you can custom-design your system to fit your price range.

There was a recent CR4 thread related to this, but alas I forget the title. Regular contributor DrMoose had some good ideas. If you search on his name, you can find his recent posts, and maybe find the thread where this was discussed.
