  • Paint
  • Epoxy resin
  • PTFE
  • Galvanising
  • Electroplating
  • bitumen
  • waxes
  • "Cling Film" (other wrappings suitable for food use are available)
  • sugar
  • chocolate dipping oh no, only good to +35degC
  • egg white
  • lubricating oil
  • Densotape

OK, it's steel. Why are you coating it? Electrical insulation? Thermal control? Or?

Is the "thing" exposed directly to solar radiation? Or is electrical heat dissipation the goal? Is it inside another package? Are there optics or mechanical contacts in this package? In other words, is outgassing and possible condensation of outgassing products on the spacecraft surfaces a consideration?

This is starting to sound like 20 questions.

What is your goal? Why did you ask the question?

Is there anything else the forum needs to know to be able to advise? Rather than drip-feeding the post, it would save a lot of effort if all the pertinent information were posted at once!

The last time I did this I used a black urethane thermal control paint over an acid wash primer.

I'd suggest you consult :

Outgassing Data for Selecting Spacecraft Materials System

or ASTM-E-595.

Good luck.

Don't spacecraft have materials requirements imposed on them that are a little tougher than "suggested by a CR4 poster"?

Is this "real" or "school"?

Bruce,

The requirements for materials for spacecraft applications are well know to many.

Anyone who takes the word of a total stranger on somethng of this nature is, well, looking for trouble.

The two documents to which I referred are useful tools for selection of materials, but there are many more factors to be considered.

Thanks,

CR4 poster.
