Compressed Air Breathing System

08/16/2010 10:46 PM

On my recent trip to India I traveled a lot on a motor bike. THe pollution is mind blowing. I felt dizzy and threw up couple of times. Got used to the pollution free air in US. How ever after coming back i started thinking of designing a system to help riders breathe better air. I am not sure if its possible at all: but here are the requirements. Cleaning the air of pollutants is costly process. The pollution is only local to the roads or when stopped at the lights, stop signs etc. My idea is to provide a compressed air canister which is hooked to the helmet via piping. This compressed air is cool (added advantage from heat). The average commute is 1hr and a human might breathe close to 200 gallons of air. Now I need to find a cheap tank dimensions to hold 200 gallons of air and under minimal psi (so accidents does not explode the tank) Can any one calculate the size of the tank.

What do do think of diving gear? The fins are not that practical on a motor cycle. The Diving Glasses you can use too and the gear comes with 2 mouthpieces. Kind of assurance that your passenger keeps his(her) mouth shut. May be practical too? Blowing up the suit makes your landings softer too.

An activated carbon filter respirator would be far cheaper, easier, and probably safer than an air tank on a small moving vehicle. Build something like this into the helmet?

I fully appreciate and endorse your suggestion of using activated carbon as air mask medium. Activated carbon fabric used as simple mask was found to remove many pollutants including toxic lead.

http://tih.sagepub.com/content/24/9/569.abstract appearing on Toxicology and Industrial health under title " Role of activated carbon fabric mask to prevent lead absorption" a study in which I was associated, provides an insight in to the property of Activated Carbon Fabric (ACF) to reduce toxic air pollutants like lead.

Some years ago motorcyclists in europe and Japan wore bandanas that contained a charcoal filter over their faces

I feel somewhat nervous about giving this as I am worried that you could not figure this out for yourself

200 gallons at atmospheric pressure ie 14.7 psia (typically referred to as 0 psig, 0 barg) is equivalent to:

100 gallons at 29.4 psia (14.7 psig or 1 barg)

50 gallons at 58.8 psia (44.1 psig or 3 barg)

ok you probably get the idea by now, P/V = constant (I think its Boyles Law and you need to use absolute pressure)

For a pressurised container a typical minimum pressure is 50 psig or 3.5 barg

Typically a canister would have a length of 3 times the diameter so your 50 gallon canister would be 17" diam and 51" long suggesting you need higher pressures.

Scuba diving air cylinders have typically 200 - 300 barg pressure so you can see the impact this would have on volumes.

I would imagine bikers wouldnt be that keen on having a large cylinder strapped to their back - it seems like another risk in an accident it would change the weight and centre of gravity but I am not sure not being a biker how that would impact handling etc.

One last thing is you would need to make sure that wherever you filled your cylinders either was in a clean air area or scrubbed the air imagine getting it filled with the air quality around connauight circus or some of the more enclosed areas around the Red Fort

But the best ideas are the carbon filter masks
