Find the manufacturer's web site, there are different types of eye bolts to consider. Comercial duty eye bolts that are designed for lifting or load holding will be designed to a standard. This will depend on what country they are manufactured/sold in. All standards will be stated by the manufacturer.

Off the top of my head try Mc Master Carr http://www.mcmaster.com/ they are a supplier I have used state side for eyebolts, and have always provide the rated capacities.

Many lifting manuals/handbooks (pipe fitters handbook) will have a section on eyebolts but do not use these ratings you should always get the manufaturers SWL which is given for the set angles, with a SF of 5 minimum. Certificates supplied with the bolts should match the serial numbers on them.

There are many non rated eyebolt, for domestic type situations, do not confuse these with the real load taking items, even if you know the size and material.

For some good information log onto the US Navy's NAFAC web site or Search for NAFAC P307, this is a very good lifting manual, that is free to download.

please note carefully. Eye bolts from 'commercial' suppliers should come with 'certificates of authenticity' with all the information about them. Only such 'certified' eye bolts can be

used in applications involving 'the public' or other workers. Uncertified eyebolts should not be used in any application where failure would present a hazard to people.

It can be calculated using the formula; Shear Stress = Force / cross sectional area.

If double lapping, Force / 2 X area. Stress of any material can be read fron standard charts.

Use appropriate factor of safely.
