Concrete Volute Pump

Hello, I am a mechanical engineering student at the University of New Brunswick. I am currently working on my senior project designing a Condenser cooling water system for a fictional plant. I have defined my system parameters and have a tenetive systme curve, after some research I found that a Concrete Volute pump would satisfy my pumping requirements of 250 000 USgpm (approximate) but have then found that these pumps are built for specific applications and there pump curves are generated from scale models, does anyone have any idea where I would be able to find pump curves for this pump? The pump selection is not a major part of the project so anything will do. Also if you know of other pumps that can handle the above mentioned flow rate please advise and I will consider them. I can design my system around the pump so pressure drop is not my consern at the moment.

Try Stanwell power station (Stanwell corporation) in Australia. This is a 4 x 350 MW coal fired station with concrete volute pumps for the cooling water system (they were some of the first of these big pumps in Australia).

I have been playing with the "Save New Orleans" pumps at 15,000 USGS (per second) and studied concrete volutes as well as others. Go to Flowserve Pump web site and click around for concrete volutes and you can get some strange looking curves. Also Ebara and Weir make them. Most companies are so busy now they will not generate a curve for you as a student but just call them and beg. You can use axial flow vertical pumps if your head is very low, 10-30 feet or so; if you need more head you can go to a mixed flow vertical. My super pumps I'm studying are mixed flow verticals at about 20 feet diameter and 4-6 foot diameter shafts. Yours might be a 60" pump or so. You can enter pump websites and put in your flow and head and they will select some models, and you can download curves. Weir, Flowserve, Johnston (Sulzer) [250,000 might be just on the edge for Sulzer Johnston]. Flowserve's site is painless for such activity. Ebara is painful, Weir OK. It's also the Texas A&M Pump Symposium this week in Houston so every pump guy on earth is here, like me. So nobody will be available to call. I've also studied putting hydraulic driven ship thrusters in dams or other concrete structures, horizontally. Good luck.

Hai Jordan,

Although it is quit a time ago you placed your question. I still will give you some information. Flowserve is one of the best companies for concrete volute pumps. I live in the Netherlands and have excellent relations with this firm and when you like it I could help you getting the information you need.

My self i am a consultant for mechanical engineering, specially for pumping stations I am experienced for 30 years now with Concrete pumping stations
