Bearing Application

03/04/2007 5:51 PM

I would like to ask some general information about bearings.

1. generally: how bearings are classified.

2. What "load capacity" of a bearing actually means.

3. how to increase a bearings life

4. Please explain the characteristics of sliding contact and rolling contact bearing in term of lubricant used, starting friction, damping vibration, and noise generated

1. There are linear ball bearings, roller bearings, and a few types of plain bearings made of plastics which slide instead of roll (igus DryLin). www.igus.com/.de

2. For DryLin bearings there is a static load capacity, which allows 3% max deformation. There is also a dynamic load capacity, which basically is defined by the speed and mating shaft material (for frictional heat build up).

3. Best thing to do is either add more bearings, increase the space between two bearings on one rail (to reduce moments), keep the rails as straight as possible and use floating bearings; basically keeping the moments (overhangs) as low as possible will help all bearings. Use a hard anodized aluminum shaft will also increase DryLin lieftime.

4. Sliding bearings like igus's do not need lubrication - they are blended in to the plastic. Friction is higher than ball bearings, approx 0.20.

I used to use a lot of them at my last job.

Matmean,

your question needs to be specified to the field of applications you are looking after. Lubricated bearings (lubrication media might be gas, air, water-like fluids or oil), roller bearings or slide bearings, are available for all kind of rotating equipment - from bearing a hard drive up to support of huge mills with 6 m diameter - for very low speed rotation to more than 50,000 rpm.

Non lubricated bearings are used for an un-predictable scope of applications, but for small relative movements: from simple bushings to expansion sliders for bridges.

So let us know, what field of applications you are interested in. Then you may get useful answers. References to makers like SKF or IGUS are nor really helpful, I think.

regards, albert

1.Sliding Bearing and Rolling Bearing;

2.Static load capacity and Dynamic load capacity; You can find the definitions and calculate formulas from text book of mechanical principle.

3.Many way to increase a bearing life. For rolling bearing, there are more less ppm material, harder of rolling surface, lubrication and less weariness, etc.

4.It is difficuty to describe by several words.Simple say that Friction starts from contacting between two parts and layer of film while lubricated.Between two parts there will be a film call elasticity hydro-film.Vibriation and voice comes from roughness of parts surface. Some micro-waves of ball, roller and groves surface collided each other.
