Fixture Standards

08/18/2010 2:14 AM

hello, I am a student, we are given one assignment. I am supposed to research on standards and recommended practices for fixture.

while I was searching on google, I came across one document - IEST-DTE-RP-013, Shock and Vibration Fixturing.

I also searched on website of IEST. but this document is under development.

is there any other way to get this document?

what other standards or recommended procedures are available for fixturing?

thanks.

This sounds pretty open-ended for a "homework assignment." I don't know if any of these ideas will be helpful but I would try:

1. If this document is under development, ask IEST if there is a predecessor that you can have.

2. Google "shock and vibration fixturing". Maybe something will turn up.

3. Approach this from first principles; i.e., the forces that result from shock and vibration loadings, and the strength and geometry of materials needed to resist these forces.

4. Search also on machine-shop concepts such as jigs, clamps, and fixtures.

These may be rather vague ideas, but I hope they give you a start. Best of luck.

It is very honorable that you to stated that you are a student in your opening sentence... keep this honor and ethic throughout your entire life.

There is a fine line between looking for someone else to do your homework and simply seeking guidance. I have had some less than adequate professors in my time (those that can do, can not always teach) and I have had to seek guidance and clarity from other persons before I could even begin my research.

Regardless of whether that is your circumstance or not is irrelevant, however, I interpret form your post that you're not simply looking for an answer, and rather seeking advice.

The advice I can give, in addition to what was already provided is...

1. Fixturing is a broad subject matter... select a specific area (i.e. welding, machining, assembly, or inspection)

2. Google is fine to start with, take some key words from your search results that are relevant and interest you and use those to refine your search.

3. Just like most things, there is more than one tool for the job, internet search engines are the same... once you get a nice set of search terms that you like, plug them into different search engines besides Google, you'll be surprised what you find.

4. As for the document issue you are having, and related to any document access issues you may have in the future, your best solution is to contact the document publisher directly.

Good luck in school, study hard, and welcome to the field where we take dreams and make them into realities.
