The Good and Bad News:

The good news is that you can probably find a Haynes service manual pretty cheap at the local automotive store (or online at Haynes Manual ).

The bad news is your life and others are riding on your brakes. If you make a mistake it can be catastrophic. Someone could loose their life. Or, you could be sued if it was known that your work caused an accident.

If you are not confident and comfortable with doing brakes, take it to a competent service shop and let them do the job and assume the liability.

Thoughts on the subject:

1. BUY THE BLOODY BOOK ON THE CAR!!

2. READ THE SECTION ON BRAKES!!

If you decide to continue...

3. Find someone who has done it before to supervise... especially if this is your first time.

There ARE special tools which are used ONLY on shoe and drum type brakes. Doing the job without them can guarantee much frustration and banged up hands.

You can pull the brake drums off both sides, but ALWAYS complete one side before starting the other side (so you have a model). Also with typical Bendix style brakes, there are two heavy duty springs which fit onto one post. ALWAYS put these springs back on in the same way they came off. Check your model!! Which one goes first?

If you really do have disks on the rear, you may need special tool 1234567 (or whatever) to release the emergency brake from the caliper. Otherwise you cannot remove the caliper to remove the pads. READ THE BOOK!!

On the subject of books... IF you plan on keeping (and maintaining) this vehicle, try and get the original FORD shop manual on it. It will have everything you need to know for this particular make and year. If this is not possible, go for Chiltons. If this does not work, go for Haynes. I personally do not like Haynes because they pack many models and many years into one book... to the point that the book is virtually worthless.

Good luck on your venture.

Bill
