Windoze updates often break things.

You will have to roll back or wait for the patch.

Notify M$ of the problem.

XP is still being supported for now.

Check the "Knowledgebase" articles at microsoft.com for your specific problem.

Many laptops have a Fn key and is a different (text) color than the other keys. This allows several keys to have more than one function. Could this Fn key be stuck, or maybe Windows made a change somehow to make this be "on" when booted?

Just a thought.

Something I posted on a previous thread about this issue:

"There are actually two keyboard settings in Windows XP. One is where you would expect it, in "Settings/Control Panel/Keyboard/Hardware". The other is wierd- it is under "Settings/Control Panel/Regional and Language/Languages/Details". I have had to mess around with these two settings to convince my XP machine that I am using a Spanish keyboard while I am working in English. And, of course, there are infinite variations on the "standard" Spanish keyboard, and I had to try several different ones to find the one that really corresponded to the actual key layout I am using. Linux is a whole lot smarter about this..."

There are some additional pointers on the thread you may find helpful- you can find it at:

I occasionally see the same thing happen - it seems to occur when I accidentally hit a strange combination of keys around the enter/shift/ctrl area of the keyboard .....possibly multiple keys together...

Unfortunately I haven't yet been able to intentionally reproduce it, however for me the cure is to save what I am currently working on(using mouse only), close the application and restart it.

I have had it happen while using Altium and not affect Office applications, or happen in MS Office and affect all MS Office applications but nothing else ...... very strange - if it is MS Office I have to close all MS Office apps and reopen then - so far it hasn't required a reboot to recover.

The first time it happened I searched out those two keyboard setup locations but everything appeared to be in order ...... VERY STRANGE .....

But doesn't that sum up Microsoft!

regards

Bill

Thanks.

It is not MS Office only but also anywhere I type it is the same. I have to type my password & copy paste it .

The letters / symbols / punctuations changed are:

over ket 2 is @ and mark is " both are interchanged

as on ' is " while marking is @ -"-

while over 3 is # while mark is UK pound

and under # is | while it is marked as ~ the key above right Shift & to left of Enter key

The above key & key on left of 1 have all changed.

Before this it was all OK ; all keys according to marked symbols.

If you get some clue please.

This definitely sounds like you have the wrong keyboard map selected. Wikipedia offers good illustrations of the various "standard" layouts that show the variations used in different regions of the world. One needs to identify the layout that most nearly matches the labels on one's keyboard, and set this as the default in Settings. From my Windows days, I know that Windows on occasion would decide to change my default settings for reasons indiscernible to the typical user, and I would have to reset the default occasionally. I finally got around this by deleting all of the other possible options in the setting menus, so that only the keyboard I was using was offered as an option. Of course, after spilling a cup of coffee on the keyboard and having to replace it, I would generally have to redefine my default...
