Wind Generator to 10 Circuit Plug in

08/25/2010 11:38 AM

I have a Honda Generator and a plug to 10 Circuits in my home. Can a wind generator plug into this? 220 type plug. If so, do you have a recommendation of the type of wind generator I need for home use.

You should separate t he generators Even when the Honda doesn't run and you'll find a wind powered generator with the same output, the coils of the Honda will probably be powered when not in service.

When the Honda runs, you also have no synchronism if AC is generated.

Further, running a generator of what ever sort requires a disconnect switch between your place and the grid (power company) so that you don't compromise the grid safety and workers.

Unless you have a pact with the "WINDMAKER" Himself, generating constant frequency and amplitude AC will be difficult.

Most generators I recommend produce DC and require an inverter to 220 Volts AC or a battery bank + charger/inverter to make it work.

My short answer is No. Not directly.

There are exceptions and if you are looking to get by cheap AND safe, I would suggest going and doing something else now. For the 'right way', please consult some folks that specialize in alternate energy and possibly even doing grid tie.

I am thinking you need to go from the wind generator (probably generating AC, but at various speeds, so various frequencies) and make direct current. This then could go to a charge controller (also should interface to the wind generator in case of over powering what can be handled, like in a high wind), probably to batteries that could be shared with a PV system, to an inverter (that might even allow interfacing to the generator powered AC by doing phase matching) then to your circuits.

Going green is a very admirable goal, but it is not as simple as many would like us to believe. ... Lots of luck on your journey.

The only small wind turbines that are worth having are Jacobs and similar quality - quite expensive.

The wind turbines hucksters try to sell for residential use for a few thousand dollars are junk and generally useless.

Believe maybe 5% of what you read about residential wind turbines. A big fraction of what is published is by greens who have no idea or the manufacturers who are trying to sell junk.

russ123,

Your comments are "exactly" what I found researching on the net. My Honda generates 6300 watts... a Lowes windmill @ 900 watts I would need about 7.5 windmills at $2,700 a piece.... I find that solar is even worse. Can I ask you another question...? My goal is to "supplement" my generator power and doesn't seem viable with solar or wind. Is there a safe and effective way to store gasoline for the generator. Know it's very flammable but if I can store around 50 gallons I would be in pretty good shape. I have two 5 gallons but didn't want to store anymore than that in my garage.

Thanks! Rmcder2

Here's a [Trifuel generator]

Look around the site they have diesel models too, which [the diesel fuel] would be much safer to store

Garthh,

The Trifuel regulator is "exactly" what I need! Thank you! Would you recommend for easier / larger storage... Propane or Natural Gas? Would like to install a tank at the back of my yard. I'm sure that's another story I need to research.

Thanks, Rmcder2

Details we need details.... Continuous or intermittent

how big is the load, both peak & average.

you should be able to make a nice clean natural gas hook-up with a shut off to hook the regulator & flex line...

Most propane companies will rent you a 500 gallon tank for $10 a month
