LPG Burner Shuts Off With a Blast

08/26/2010 4:10 AM

Hi,

Can any one please explain to me this phenomenon. There is this LPG burner (commercial cooking range type). We fired it and it worked good for couple of hours. Next day we fired it again, it worked for few minutes and there was blast and it just shut down. what is this any why this has happened??

Does it still work? If it doesn't anymore, then there could have been some sort of blockage in the valve and the bang you heard was the valve bursting due to excessive pressure. I know this sounds very unlikely, but in the absence of more information or a picture of the stove pipeline or anything similar, it's as good as anyone's guess.

the burner is still working, nothing damaged except for the marble tile on which it was mounted. See the are decorative burner, basically decorative flames in garden/pool areas working on gas. Some of the people on site were saying that the burner might have back fired because of insufficient air supply etc. i have a drg but not sure how to share on CR4, i can mail you if you can provide your mail id.

Thanks,

Check for gas leaks at connection and hose where it ties into the burner. It sounds like you have leaking gas somewhere near the burner. When gas contacts flame...........POOF! The resulting explosion will also extinguish the burner flame.

A spray bottle of soapy water will tell you where leak is.

Yes, that is for me the best explanation; the resulting explosion consumes instantly the air required by the flame, thus it kills it.

He better finds that leak soon, before it gets worse and a bigger bubble of gas accumulates and makes a nasty ka-boom among the (apparently very whealty) guests.

gas pressure to high, or draft to low ......have the pressure checked at the valve.

and then check the draft.

as to the .....<it just shut down> need more information to discern.

It may be a good idea to check if it has been valved for LPG. It may be valved for natural gas and if that is the case explosions are highly likely.

Many burners have different jets that can be replaced depending on the gas used.

That blast indicates that you are Not using the correct or proper gas regulator! Check the type of regulator you are using. If you are using a regular 20 -25 gallon LPG supply tank, there is a safety mechanism built-in between the valve on the tank and the regulator that is connected to the stove. that safety mechanism prevents the flow of gas if they are not properly matched. You may encounter intermittent gas flow or gas leak if they are not matched!

Commercial type stoves plumbings and regulator are typically designed to operate on natural gas. But can also modified to work on LPG with a properly match fittings and regulator! Typically an LPG regulator has a low working pressure is 15 psi. Natural gas operated regulators has a higher working pressure since they are designed to be connected to much bigger commercial burners!

It is a very dangerous situation if not done properly so better consult a stove professional.

vsar- normal pressure for ng is 3-5 in.wc, lp is 10-14. he probably has a nat gas stove hooked up with lp and the valve is not able to glow so he has blow by. a qualidied installer would see the problem in minutes. don't believe an answer is do here because the guy is probably not qualified and I never help people injure themselves or others. Tell him to call a qualified tech.

You may have a mouse in the venturi tube, call an exterminator and the appliance repair person!
