Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) is not an engineering field or area that you can switch to. It is the preliminary phase (also called Conceptual Design phase) of the engineering project. The purpose of the FEED is to identify the

(1) Feasibility of the project

(2) Costing of the project

(3) Major equipment required for the project

(4) Major issues that can arise during the project

(5) Major deliverables of the project, and etc.

Based on the findings in FEED, the investors decide 'GO' or 'NO GO' decision for further proceed with the project.

Some times, especially for large projects, Pre-FEED (also called Study phase) is done before FEED.

Generally, most of the Oil and Gas engineering projects undergo these phases: (1) Pre-FEED, (2) FEED, (3) Detail Design, (4) Procurement, (5) Construction and (6) Testing and Commissioning

The deliverables of the FEED are used as the stating documents for Detail Design of the project.

If you are interested working in FEED, you have to be involved in a new project in your refinery or try to get a job in EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) company. Generally EPC companies do the FEED of the project.

Here are some of the EPC companies and their websites:
