Generation Voltage for Hydrogenerators.

09/08/2010 2:02 AM

Dear sir,

I am concerned about genration voltage for hydrogenerators, which as per CBI & P manual is 11kV for 5 MVA or more capacity. But, in practical cases, I have seen a hydrogenerator designed at 6.6kV for 6.3 MVA capacity? How is this possible?

Regards,

saurav.

sometimes systems exist far beyond the minimum requirements established in literature's this is because systems already existed long before the said literature were published or it is so design to a specific use/specified system requirement...like what we have inside our company..a 4MVA 2.4kV/480 V transformer for our 2.4KV Turbo-gen as per NEC we must employ another LV/LV x-former..another factor considered is ECONOMICS which is the biggest factor of all projects/designs..

friend.........looks like your generator is intended for isolated grid systems i.e. it is not connected to system grid and is intended to cater for some specific designtaed load...but that is not my case. We have to connect it to 132kV grid.

Saurav.

you are partly right my friend...it is isolated but we are currently studying of connecting to the grid...either the 13.8kV or the 69 kV but not to the extent of those much bigger voltages coz for some reason it is not applicable in our industry...may it be regarding to First Cost, Maintenance or even usage..

Just as in other areas of electrical power, there could be a range of parameters that can meet a specific goal. Remember, for a given MVA rating, higher voltage will result in lower current, thus smaller conductors but thicker or different insulation. It is a trade-off, and often you can meet your criteria with varying designs.

Usually the larger the generator capacity, the higher the voltage, up to a limit that I would suspect is related to the insulation rating of the stator. After that, you need to step up the voltage to your transmission voltage. So, you just need to pick what works best with your system.
