iMac Power Supply

09/09/2010 8:53 AM

On Tuesday night when I got home, my iMac fizzed and then went bang. I think the power supply has blown. Does anyone have experience of replacing these (DIY) or is it a case of taking my bank account and giving it all to Apple.

It's a 24" LCD running OS10.4 about 5 years old.

Here's a video that might give you an idea of what you'd be in for if you want to do it yourself.

What is the model number of your iMac? If you heard a pop or a bang, it may be a capacitor that has blown - replacing capacitors is much cheaper than replacing the power supply. That may not be for your iMac, so let us know the model number and that might help.

I think the iMac is a core 2 duo 2.16 24-inch, with a 2.16Ghz .

It's the white plastic flat screen LCD iMac circa late 2006.

Nothing happens with the power attached, not a dickie bird.

Did you smell burning of any sort? Did this happen right in front of you or did you come home and your iMac just wouldn't respond at all? Nothing happens when you try another power socket in your home?

Looks like this is the power supply you'd be looking for.

I think my misses had been on it during the day as everything was unplugged when I came home. She is currently denying everything.

I switch it on and as it booted up, it was making a high pitched fizzing sound and then it was "Bang".

PC's at where I work regularly go bang and the power supply is to blame. This made the same noise, which is why I think it is the power supply.

The reason the work ones go bang is due to carbon fibre. This is not the case at home.

Thanks for your help.

You could get a real computer for about a third less...
