Replace CAT VR3 Regulator with VR6

09/10/2010 6:57 AM

We have five CAT 3516 with SR4 generators, 2000KVA,600V,60Hz, They work in parallel , isochronous speed. Regulator for Speed & Load Sharing control is 2301A and Actuator is EG-10P. AVR is VR3 regulator with original CAT droop transformer and 8 ohm droop pot. In last time we had a lot of problems with KVAr regulation ( very poor regulation ). Very often we have to adjust system. AVR-s are old over 20 years. Sensing voltage come from original CAT PT transformer ( 600/240v ) and original CAT power transformer 600/240v.It means we have not PMG. Now we have new five VR6 CAT regulators and we would like to install it in existing generators panels ( old VR3 was installed in generators ). Excitor stator has double winding F1-F2 , F3-F4 and for Vr3 regulator windings are connected in parallel ( cca 3,5ohma ) Questions May I leave winding in paralel or I need connect in serial ( for new VR6 ) What capacity (VA,) and secundary voltage of the power transformer has to be? What is better solution, take old CAT CT transformer or install new one ( 5A )? And last questions Our regulation is only in DROOP mode ( reostat 8ohma -paralell with droop transformer ). CT-s are not connected between AVR-s in Cross-current compensation mode. Would you please explain us when we use Cross-current compensation mode and when only droop mode ? ( our application ) I would like to tell you, on site we have a lot of induction 3phase motors and seven DC motors each 600 KW ( oil rig equipment )

I don't have a schematic available right now to see about F-3 and F-4, I'll look that up later, but would it be possible to return the VR6s and purchase CDVR, They are digital you program them with a laptop, much earier to set the droop, you can set them to power factor or Var regulation, a little tricky to set up but, once done just copy to the other gensets, you can watch them operate with a laptop in real time.

Hi Norton850 Would you please, tell me basic difference beatween Croos-current compensation connection and Droop connection. Now, our VR3 are Droopp connected. What is your suggestion? What is the batter connection for our system? Thank you

I found this thread,

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/38885/How-Does-Cross-Current-Compensation-in-Parallel-Generators-Work

I haven't seen it used very often because its real tough to setup, qwith droop the output voltage drops as load is applied, it is used when synchronized so the regulators don't try to drive each other, the gensets will start in isochronous and change to droop after they sync. to the buss. The droop would be set around 2-3%, either way your going to need droop. This is the regulators not the governors, the governors would be isochronous. It would be best if you had a power factor or var controller, that is why I suggested the CDVR, PF and VAR control is available standard with that regulator.

Your supplier should be able to supply you with free software to program them, there are some electrical characteristics about the alternators that you will need that they can look up by serial number, I can pull out some notes when I have when I get a chance.
