What is the formula for finding the bearing area of soil.

the bearing area of soil is calculated by the ratio of loads to soil bearing capacity

Shouldn't that be referred to as the the Net Allowable Soil Bearing Pressure since you're applying a Factor of Safety to the Design Load? This approach would take into account the weight of the footing, which would be deducted from the Allowable Soil Bearing Capacity.

I may be correct or incorrect in my assertion above; I do believe that is the correct approach, but I don't have my soil mechanics textbook (by Joesph E. Bowles) in front of me at the moment to double check it.....
