Introducing the XSS-111

07/22/2005 1:00 PM

The U.S. Air Force is using a small spacecraft to explore a range of future military applications such as in-space servicing and repair, as well as close-up inspection of satellites in support of future space operations. The Experimental Satellite System-11 (XSS-11) weighs around 220 lbs. and is about the size of a dishwasher. It was developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

I wonder if they will be used to carry payloads that are already in orbit. They would be great for moving satellites back into orbit.
