Close Focus Web Cam for Demoing Handheld Devices

09/14/2010 10:55 PM

I teach instrumentation courses, classroom and/or webinar.

A significant portion of the instruction involves instrument configuration through various means/devices.

PC based configuration is easy to handle in either the classroom or webinar venue.

What I'm looking for is a close focus streaming web cam that can focus and display keypads and LCD displays common to instrumentation or keypads and displays on Pocket PCs or industrial handheld communicators. In some cases this is a 2-3" focus distance.

Adequate resolution is necessary, but high resolution is not particularly beneficial for streaming webinar presentations.

Are there any suggestions for a USB web cam that can focus close up and stream its video for PC webinar or PC projection?

Dude,

I've been meaning to PM you sometime, find out what you did in the process world, but it's been crunch time past two weeks (kids' weddings, not work). We gotta cross paths sometime, have some laughs about doing the process instrumentation .edu gig.

I have the perfect tool for you: IPEVO Point2View USB camera.

Stick your HART handheld in place of the compass or pencil in the photo, lock and load.

Check it out:
http://www.ipevo.com/Point-2-View-USB-Camera_p_70.html

All for $70 USD plus shipping. Complete with the stand. (claimer: I get $80 commission on every sale)

It lacks only a conventional camera's 1/4x20 (?) threaded tripod mount.

There's no microphone, like a web cam, but I wear a wireless mike for larger groups to save my voice, and headset mike for webinars, so I don't miss the mike.

Where are you wrt GMT? I'm -6. You doing Houston ISA in October?

Carl

Do you think I could use one of those instead of one of these:-

for PCB (Printed Circuit Board) re-work? Could you for example pick up that pencil, and, move a grain of sugar to a specified point on the compass by looking at the PC screen?

That's a nice device. For closer stuff I use a USB microscope, mine is a Veho but there are others around.

This image is of my calculator & is about as far away as the microscope will go.

This one is some surface mount components.

If you need to record what you do CaptureWiz is useful. It basicly records whatever is on your screen so you can include the mouse cursor & show programme dialogues etc.

The Logitech Pro 9000 has automatic focus, can focus very close (I forget exactly how close) and is really good quality, it costs around $100 if I remember correctly.....
