Slide Gates in Primary Air Circuits

09/15/2010 12:56 AM

Dear Friends,

We are having 200TPH pulverised coal fired boilers. Our Primary air circuit takes hot air from Sec air duct [ after RAPH] and feeds to the Coal Puverisers. Primary circuit parameters are P.A fan I/L = 250mmwc, P.A.Fan O/L = 900mmwc. Hot air temp= 320deg [ both].

We are facing problems of hot air leakages in P.A circuit through a) Expansion bellows [metallic], b) Slide gate seals, c) P.A Fan seal side, d) ATM damper shaft gland.

My question is 1) What can be done to avoid buckling of slide gate? Can a single plate welded near the end of gate prevent buckling OR will it do any damage to SS-316L gate?

The slide gate warping is due to the escape of hot gases past it. Stiffners as you mention won't help.

What you need is a slide gate that functions/seals as it should. I will see if I can locate the name of an engineer in Surat that used to work for me where we designed such things often.

Dear Sir,

Extremely thankful for the interest shown and your insight into this.

We have three plans:--

1. Provide a stiffner at the lower inside end of the gate [ about 10mm from bottom so as to avoid lower seating ]. This may act as a barrier for the leaking hot air, supplementing the original seals, Also, it may act as stiffner. But we are doubtful whether such a stiffner we provide, may damage our SS-316L gate [ 10mmthick gate] like stress on the gate etc?. Plz tell me Is it that whether logitudinal stiffners are for buckling along length and lateral stiffners for reducing buckling along width?

2. Secondly, To Partially cover the gate and provide a second set of seals . Full cover is impeding the C&I maintenance on limit switches. But this is not solving problem of side leakages [ from the clearance between side edge of the Gate & frame]

3. Change the material from SS-316L seals to HastalloyC-276, Trishcal steel or some Ionium .

We are presently attacking 4--5 areas of leakages in primary air ducting for our continous improvement program, so as to reduce the heavy amount of leakage, which is having too much of implications.
