When changing speed with a gear box, torque is changed inversely to the speed change. This can provide some serious benefits in some applications. With a VFD, torque remains constant as speed is changed. Gearboxes represent a power loss, so are less efficient than VFDs. VFDs are infinitely variable, gears are not. VFDs create harmonic disturbance on the power supply, gearboxes do not. There's more, I'm just tired of it now.

Do you mean a variable speed gearbox? From past experience, I'd avoid them like the plague! Inefficient and unreliable!
