Suitability of SS316 for Storing Service Water

09/18/2010 12:52 PM

Hello Specialists,

A spare tank of SS316 is available for service. it has Nitrogen blanketing facility also. Can service water be stored in that? The general water specification for the service water has been : pH 6.5 to 7.5, Chlorides 100-250 PPM. water is going to be of stagnant nature. can any other concern need to be reviewed also?(microbial etc..)

appreciate an appropriate reply. in case coating is recommended, which coating would be appropriate?

Thanks

Surya

At first glance it looks fine. Is this nuclear?

S316 has molybdenum for improved resistance to corrosion from chloride ... I'd guess that it is AISI 316L, since it must obviously be welded.

You have there, sir, the situation for which the material was designed. No coating is need for the specifications cited.

A lining maybe needed ... as in the act of donating legal tender into my pocket. ;o)

Unless we know the specification for the use of said service water, it cannot be said if the nitrogen blanket is needed or not.

Here are some previous CR4 discussions regarding stainless 316l:

SS316 is okay for water service with chloride content up to approx 500-1000 ppm, but this is also a function of the operating temperature. At ambient temperature i'll say that you'll have no corrosion.

hope this helps

The purpose of a tank is to allow the level to go up and down. So why is it intended that the water should be stagnant?

In order to prevent stagnancy, either get rid of the tank or don't put any water in it.
