Do you just have just the printer drivers loaded, or is there some printer "organizing" stuff (maybe it came on a CD with the printer, like the crap that HP try to con you into using)? If it's the latter, then said software may be setting one of the printers as default during start-up, overriding your setting.

The printers I have are, a) HP Desket 1280, and, b) HP photosmart 8200. Both printer sets of software are loaded. the main printer I use, is of course, the 1280, and this is the printer I set as default. This keeps flipping over to the 8200. ^&%$^!! There is no "organising Stuff", of which am aware! Norm.

When you installed the printers, did you use the HP CDs, and let them do their thing, or did you just plug the printer in, wait for the "New Hardware" wizard, and use the CDs when it asked for drivers?

Could be there's something in there (HP software is, IHMO, top-heavy crap) that's forcing the change. Did you install the Photosmart after the 1280?

You could try un-installing and re-installing the 1280.

Did you install the drivers for the printers before you plugged them in? If not you'll need to un-install them and reinstall them while the printers are not plugged in. All kinds of crazy stuff can happen if you install drivers while the printers are plugged in.

Depends where you do the settings! If you do them when loading a print job or from any program, office or other software you will have your selection overwritten as soon as you close the application.

Make the change directly from the Start menu-->Settings-->Printers and faxes--> right click the printer you want as default ans "set as default"

If you did this and problems remains I can not help you.

You may have another application (Microsoft?) which thinks that your 8200 is the default and changes it to be so ..... remember that MS always think that they know best....!

I have a HP business inkjet 1000 and a Brother laser HL2140. The HP is default but have noticed that if I use the Brother a couple of times it can stay with the Brother even though I do not pick it. So it seems like windows is doing some anticipation occasionally.

This does not happen unles the Brother is used so I just keep my eye on the print box. Is this similiar to your problem?

Does the flipping ^&%$^!! happen when you are booting?

Which operating system are you running?

Not quite enough info.

Some applications "remember" the last printer used and will default to that even if another printer is the default. Try several applications -- Notepad for instance. If all of them default to the "wrong" printer, you can assume there is some kind of problem. But if some recognize the default printer, then it may be the other applications that are choosing the other printer.

Set the printer you want to default to. When ready to print click print and when the box comes up at the lower left hand corner click the box in print options to print to default printer only. This should take care of your problem from what information you have given.
