Pointer Position Recognition

09/21/2010 2:24 AM

Friends

I wish to have imaging system to recognize the pointer position of normal 90 deg analog dia. in terms of degrees from 0 to 90% accurate to the tune of 0.5%( or we may say 0.5 deg. roughly, being 90 deg as 100%)

The purpose is to eliminate the manual reading errors and to test the analog dial type instrument against input parameter.

I tried to search on internet, but could not get much information.

Can anybody help.

Honeywell makes an electronic (wireless) gauge reader for pressure gauges that have a 270° scale., but I suspect that your dials are electrical meters, not pressure gauges.

Sure - such a system can be made. My company makes vision systems. Though we have not yet made one to read pointer postion on analog meters we are pretty confident of being able to make one. If you are serious about it please write to me separately.

I want to point out one issue here. You must be aware that the anlog gage you have can be relied upon for a 'correct' reading only to the 'least count' - in this case the smallest division on the dial. To interpolate between two adjacent markings is plain WRONG! So I hope you have taken this into account while specifying the accuracy level of 0.5%.

Selsyn TX/RX systems have been around for a while and are used to measure angular rotation. Changes in Radar antenna movement being one. Once an aircraft radar is locked onto a target, changes in target heading are transmitted by the Selsyn to the pilot/autopilot which then can shift the A/C heading to maintain lockon. Accuracy is essential and would be well suited for your purpose.

Hello Brian,

We, at DuraVision Systems (www.duravision.in) have developed an imaging system to read pointer position on analog dial. I have attached a screen shot of the application. As you can see pointer is red and the center line as detected by the system is in green. The angle detected can be converted to the required scale as per customer's requirements. For demo purpose we have displayed just the angle from a horizontal line. Accuracy of 0.5% is achievable but will depend on various issues like straightness of pointer, vibrations while taking image etc. In one instance we are computing a mean position from a set of 10 readings as the pointer is found to vibrate a bit. Of course, the pointer color could be other than red. Please let me know if you are still interested in the system as it has been a while since you posted your requirement! My mail ID is: kishor.durve@duravision.in
