Influence on Deionized Water Purity by 316 Stainless Steel

09/21/2010 5:45 AM

Whilst it is accepted that 316 stainless steel has a high corrosion resistance to deionized water and is therefore suitable as a material of construction for a deionized water storage tank.

My concern revolves around the ion contamination of the deionized water by the 316 stainless steel. whilst for high purity water such as ASTM type 1 water 316SS would not be suitable, I have not been able to find any literature on the effect of 316SS on the purity of lower grades of deionized water.

Does anyone know of any studies conducted on the influence of stainless steels on deionized water purity and any mass transfer rates of ion migration into the water from the stainless steel?

No, because the most sensible materials to contain deionise waters are the plastics. Glass-reinforced polyester, ABS, and PVDF all score much higher.
