Problem Deleting Files/Folders from Windows Explorer

09/22/2010 10:04 AM

Recently when I try to delete anything from Windows Explorer, it freezes for a minute and says "Windows Explorer has stopped working", then it closes the window.

I can't delete anything. Any ideas? This is my own laptop running Windows Vista. I have not changed anything and have always been able to delete, move, etc.

My only suggestion is to be sure that you have the latest updates and that your anti-virus program does a full scan.

I agree with the first poster - check all your updates. Try running SFC from the command prompt (e.g. Sfc/scannow at cmd.exe) If you need repairs, having your copy of Vista handy is always a good thing.

You also might want to check for spyware, so running MalwareBytes is useful in this case. (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php)

Make sure that the cooling vents are unobstructed and free of lint.

You could well have just a glitch in the OS or something worse like a rootkit, spyware etc. Do run malware bytes as was suggested. After you do that, update your anti- virus and do a full scan. If it won't update you've got problems. Let me know and I'll try to help you out.

One very common problem is that the registry is fouled up. Download a free program called Glary Registry Repair. Majorgeeks.com is where I would get it or do a search for it. Run it three times or until you get a "no problems found" message. Then run a defrag program. The one in Vista will work but a bettter and faster one is auslogics also available for free from the geeks. I like it because the Windows Vista one won't defrag running programs and auslogics will, so it does a better job. Both of these programs are real easy to run.

Hopefully, all you have is a registry problem. That is very common for what you are describing, although the not being able to delete makes me a little nervous. Try the registry repair and defrag first since they're the easiest and fastest. If that doesn't work, I'll give you a hand if you'd like.

Good luck.

Randy

If the other suggestions fail you could use a programme like HDCleaner. Within this you can securely delete specific files.

May I add that in order to delete anything in the PC, even when the PC belongs to you, You need to have the Administrator's rights as a user for all files, folders and within..

Hi, It is surely an Action of some kinda VIRUS.

Incase your Explorer is Injected and also Antivirus can't work properly, Try this:

Just use WinRAR(A free archiver s/f) to view and delete files and folder instead of WinExplorer.

Try this, it also shows all the hidden file & folder. It is really good. Reply if any prob...

he has windows vista. The only way i know of to make a laptop with vista quit acting up involves you and a buddy going to your favorite hunting site, and yelling "PULL"! before he tosses it into the air...

My first line of recourse, and it is often, is simply do a SYSTEM RESTORE. I generaly go back in time 1 or 2 weeks. This is a very useful Windows Maintenance function.

Yes! Scan your system! If you have any infections, they'll need to be removed. If they can not be removed... Then it's time to consider restoring your system.

Just restoring your system time and time again isn't good, although it's quicker than trying to solve a problem your having - you might just end up with more problems than you originally had
