How to reduce tails formation in polyethylene pellets

09/23/2010 2:22 PM

During pelletizing polyethylene resin through extrusion process, the pellets we have as final products are containing tails (7 in 1 kg sample) which is not preferable to end-user (customer) , what makes tails form and what type of troubleshooting can we follow?

Are you processing LLDPE or LDPE?

Well, LLDPE is more flexible and will stretch under stress. Does your machine inject mold, or pour then cut to make pellets and are you doing heated extension? If LLDPE is not relaxed to end state when being cut or ejected from the mold, it could result in tailing or any other elongated shape. This could be from several reasons depending on how you are making them.

Actually, we are using extrusion under heat up to 200C and through die plate and as cutter knifes cutting the resin, water is cooling the pellets (water temp 77C) and convey pellets to dryer.
