Generator Trips After Running For 30Min - High Earth Leakage

09/24/2010 5:48 AM

My generator trips after running for 30 min. The display indicates " HIGH EARTH LEAKAGE". Several checks were made with no solutions.

UNIT: 415/240V 3phase 500kW @50Hz. MFG June 2006, 35.9 Hrs of operation

Have you checked the hand book to see if it's indicating an internal or external fault?

With the low hours run it may well be internal.

hai this ganeshan here.. you must check the resistance values of each phase winding and also phase to ground(body of gen...),and compare this to componey manual book"s values of that gen..(standard values), then you may get a some knowledge about the fault what you had.thank you

Have you tried running the genset unloaded, to see if it shuts down, if not check, your load, may be add a little at a time to isolate the problem.

Dear Guest,

As per your data the set the set has run 36 hours in 4 years !!. The

moisture might be a reason and causes the set to trip once the leakage current

is enough to get the relay active. There are two ways to get the fault attended.

(1) Have a 1000 watts incandecent lamp to heat the windings for about 8 hours &

check for any improvement in Insulation value ( improvement).

(2) you can also pass a load current say 25 % of the FLC - Using a low voltage

supply source- may be a step-down transformer with variac with usual

tripping controls.

This unit has been idle too much, you are supposed to exercise generators. A mouse could have nested in it and nibbled at the insulation. Moisture can get in, compromise insulation, and corrode contacts.

I would recommend a full inspection and cleaning. Ends will probably have to be removed, and the electronic control box should be carefully examined for corrosion and bug nests. Even ants can get into things and wreck havoc.

A generator this size is a big investment, take better care of it. Keep it dry and well exercised.
