Metric/Standard Calculator

09/24/2010 11:23 PM

Its time I stop looking up conversions and figuring mm, cm and inches by multiplying and dividing this into that.

I was shopping around for a Conversion calculator that does metric and Standard

conversions in lengths, area and volume.

I don;t need or want anything too advanced, just something that is user ( dummy) friendly and has big ol' numbers.

battery operated too.

So, what type, model , etc do you all recommend?

kind of expensive, since it requires computer

Doesn't require being online once it's installed

Just about the best one out there and I would hope most of us have a computer, so that is moot.

Or, try this link for calculators of every size and style:

Great calculator that does not require an internet connection!

I have a online converter, but I do the preliminary designs on a chalk board first, in the shop and then cut out a proto-type. I need something hand held to get me through the initial round. After I have a prototype cut out and sewn up I convert to Auto CAD back at the house.

Thank you for the suggestions on a good hand held.

Download from http://www.pawprint.net/vv/ free

In my view this is the best of all converters I have downloded & tried.

Claim by publisher which I can confirm due to in my use since quite some time:

Versaverter - Free Unit Conversion Tool

Versaverter rapidly gained popularity world-wide as the fastest and most complete unit conversion utility around. The original version was written for Windows 2000 and did an admirable job but times have changed and we have began the process for propelling a new version of Versaverter into the modern era.

The new version Versaverter 4 is a complete re-write of the application using the cross platform Adobe® AIR™ framework. We have retained all the key features that made Versaverter 3 such a success: Speed, extensive XML based library of units, automatic updates, and of course the free price tag!

The new version adds to this a much improved user interface, cross platform compatibility, additional speed, and dynamic search.

Have a fine day

Re: Metric/Standard Calculator

I've used Versaverter for years and highly recommend it. I do have two complaints though. One is that I have found a few incorrect conversions. One has to do with Knots to fps and the other was regarding Newtons. I was able to correct them by editing the xml file. The second complaint is a minor gripe, it's that for some units there are too many metric prefix conversions. I mean does anybody ever need to convert from yottagrams to zettagrams or exagrams? It's not that I mind them being available, just difficult to sort through the list to find the one I'm interested in using.

I have not tried version 4 yet.

Re: Metric/Standard Calculator

Hey Nets!

I don't know if this would be of help, but...

My measurements are linear, so I bought a set of digital calipers at Harbor Freight which can measure in either English or Metric. If I just need to convert a number (say from English to Metric), I just set the calipers for the English number (hey it doesn't know that it is not measuring anything), then punch the button for metric, and there I have it in cm...

Just a little item out of the "dirty tricks" bag... or I could multiply by 2.54.

Bill

That would work if it isn't too big. I also do mutiple parts to a design so I div, mutiply, add up and subtract all in the same problem.

So I need the calculator part also.

Thank you.

Why do any conversions? If your customer's specifications are inch/pound units, design to that. If they are in metric/kilogram, design with all metric values.

Re: Metric/Standard Calculator

Ro,

I have 4 volumes of design patterns ( my own creations) dating back to the 1970's.

Some of these designs are in Standard , some are in Metric.....some are MIXED.

I am in tne process of going over each design and turning it into All Standard and All Metric. Because at the time I invented it, I used both metric and standard, I am converting the Mixed designs to solid Standard and solid Metric.

I'm just cleaning up some of the patterns and re-checking them for accuracy .

My clientelle seldom sends me a pattern............they rely on me to invent one that will catch their target species, no matter how deep or rocky or even snag filled locations.

its just some cleaning up work and a hand held calculator will help me do the trick qucikly if it converts in a one step process.

IN my work, metric is sooooo much easier. But I get professors and fisheries guys ( and girls) that want to know the Standard measurements of the nets.
