Zinc Phospate - Copper Finish on Some Area

09/27/2010 2:53 AM

We are doing zinc phosphate on spring steel parts after heat treatment. In one lot we found some parts with copper finish on some area (not on full part) which we never found before.

Can you tell me why this copper finish came on the part?

Hi

Just start investigating if they have changed the supplier of your phospate.

Or maybe even it is from a different point in the mine.

It will be 99% out all cases a problem with your supplier

Copper can also come from a wire that is not in a good shape and makes little sparks of copper on your hot steel

Hope this helps

I don't have the facility to analyse the material hence I can't say that it is copper but the colour is copper

Oke

When it is only copper colour then you really will have a problem

This will be as said most probe a supplay chane problem. Or maybe even look at your own storage facility maybe the contamination is found in your own back yard as we say.

I have seen your question about the wood that made me aluert to this

Look very careful to your onw process anything chnced after the last load you have done. Equipment used for somethinfg else etc.etc

Color can come due to thin film having particular grain size in a particular zone. Unless you do surface analysis by some method, it is hard to say what is actually responsible. Color in such coating is very common and its pattern unpredictable unless you have high density of material. This film and low density coating can look funny at times. It is some Physics problem I suppose than any Chemistry involved in it.

What is the size of this spot?
