Fridge

09/28/2010 11:42 PM

Hi there, I have a whilpool fridge. about every 2-3 weeks it seems like the freezer defrosts and I end up with lots of water in the lower section. It seemed like I might have had it leaning backwards a bit too much so I raised the back wheels. If that doesn't help, can somebody give me some other options. I'm sure its something simple, just something I;m putting out there. Woody

Hello, this sounds like you have a blockage in the drain tube, remove panel back/bottom of freezer..you may see ice build up...melt ice with hair dryer/heat gun...you will see a pan below evaporator...melt ice in pan...dry water up in pan with paper towel...now you should see a hole in pan that leads to drain tube...pour some hot water in pan..wait a couple minutes..mop up water and repeat this step 2-3 times....once you have done this find some flexible curtain wire or electrical wire..poke down the hole until you see the water drain..now it is clear..put back panel back and you are good to go. The reason you see water in the fridge is because the water has been leaking into the freezer and down the vent into the fridge instead of running into the drain hole.

Some refrigerators have a drain hose running from the freezer down to a pan underneath the refrigerator section. The hose may be blocked, clogged or broken. If I'm right, you may also need to clean out some garbage where the water has been running through the insulation down into the refrigerator.

I suggest you check the online appliance parts stores for an exploded diagram of your model. That may help you find the defroster drain so you don't have to disassemble any more than is necessary to do the job.

A good forum for consumer goods repair is http://www.fixya.com. You may find a higher percentage of hands-on people there.

Kramarat nailed it, I would say. I was going to give a GA, but he was silly enough to admit his answer came from internet

New house we bought came with the fridge, it had same issue, water pooling up in the bottom of freezer, making a mess! I unplugged, pulled off the plastic covers, exposing the defrost drain, covered in an inch or so of ice. Once I got it melted and running freely again, haven't have an issue since. Don't get too forceful trying to remove the ice, give it time/warm water/a hair dryer, it's easy to break something if you try to use force to remove the ice. Don't ask me how I know

Aw, c'mon......I've quit worrying about GA's. But realistically, almost all answers here are not original thought, they just aren't known by the person asking the question.

I did give him a GA, but not without a little "ribbing" :)

Look at the back of the compressor, 1 of the pipes should have some ice around it, if it reaches the compressor itself the gas is to much. Or your thermostat can be damage. check if the compressor is actually running when its defrosting.

Gunna ask a blindingly obvious question "Is the fridge level?"

As for clearing the defrost tube..I used a length of whipper snipper line..sorta did the trick [but my fridge isn't level]

As explained by previous inputs, the drain tube might be blocked. Clear it at least.

BUT why every 2 or 3 weeks? This is the real question. The No-Frost fridges defrost every 4 to 8 hours. There is a timer that cycles through a defrost period at least twice a day to remove all the ice from the freezer compartment. If for some reason this timer is not working properly Or is too slow and takes too long to initiate a defrost cycle, then too much ice can accumulate and block the drain hole ---> at defrost, the molten ice will produce a lot of water that can go nowhere until the hole is unblocked (not obvious in this case) and you will have a flood...

Therefore, Check the timer and system to see that it is defrosting more frequently, even after unblocking the drain tube/hole from the freezer compartment.

Hi, 2 or 3 weeks seems a lot of time between defrost cycles in a regular fridge, but if the fridge is a dual evap (independent cavities and evaporators for the freezer and fresh food cavities) and the freezer door do not open often, then the defrost cycle can extend that length of time (specially if it has a door opening counter).

I had a similar problem and as the other people have pointed out it sounds like the drain tube is blocked.

The next question I asked myself is where it drains to and why I do not get another pool of water at the drain outlet.

I came to the conclusion that the amount of water is quite small and the outlet drains on to a flat plate over the compressor unit which gets quite warm. I guess the water evaporates quite quickly from the pan.

Maybe someone else can confirm (or otherwise) what happens to the drain water.

Residential fridges have a "drain tray" that is located underneath. The water drains into this tray, and the tray is located such that the cooling fan blows the compressor-warmed air over this tray, speeding up evaporation. It's a good idea to check/clean this tray on occasion. On mine, you can slide the tray out from the front, once the front lower grill is removed.

It sounds like you need to1. check the pull out pan that is attached underneath your fridge just dump it in the sink and put it back in .It should work like a drawer.2.You might have a gap in your freezer seal allowing air in.3.It may have a certain dial for defrosting that has been left on.

Experience: Your fridge gas pressure is slightly down; get it checked.
