I know this is late into the forum, but I've just encountered a "Toad".

The toad that I've found seems to be a "behind the scenes" software application that is used for database manipulation.

The original question could thus imply using the database to combine a field of "unit cost" and another field that could be in another table "Qty on hand" to get total cost (for instance). The tables would need a link field like "part number" so that they can be related to each other.
