Connection & Anchorage: New RC Beam

09/30/2010 2:53 AM

How do you connect a new reinf.concrete beam (example, size b= 400mm, d =1400nn) having a clear span= 8000mm to an existing RC wall or RC column? this is a huge beam. Assumed that the existing columns and rc walls were checked to be rigid enough for this added load.

Am thinking drilling dowels to existing rc structures (columns or walls) is an option. Is following the lockset manufacturer's recommended depth per rebar diameter is good enough, (?) irregardless of the heavy superimposed loads and deadweight of the beam itself? is this a good practice of connection details, considering the old and new concrete poor bonding? is there any alternative? is the integrity of this depend on shear forces? any formulae or calculations how we could check it or prove it is viable?

i appreciate your opinion.

If the existing structure will tolerate the load, perhaps a beam pocket. As this will be difficult to verify, a pier or column will probably be required.

If you are fortunate, member ba/ael will happen on your question and further advise the perils of your venture.

Thanks, doorman...I'll get you back some day. You will never know when...ha ha ha and tee hee hee! He who laughs last giggles a lot.

Really, there is not enough information to properly answer the question. If the existing wall or column is adequate to carry the new load, then very little is needed to anchor the new beam to the existing structure provided gravity load is the only consideration.

If there are other concerns such as seismic events, hurricanes, tornadoes, extreme temperatures or floods, then special precautions may be required. The subject is too broad to try to cover it in a forum such as this.
