Energy Savings in Commercial Lighting

09/30/2010 8:27 AM

Folks,

I have all the HID lamps--Metal Halide in an Industrial space about 20000 S.ft. Please discuss how I can save Electrical Energy ---turning off all of them is not an option.

Thanks

Turn off every second lamp. Then connect the ones turned off in zones and only turn a zone on when additional illumination is needed in that zone for a given period.

Is the work area occupied 100% of the time?

Does every area need the same level of illumination?

You could zone the lighting.

yes.

all areas need same level of llumination.

yes, I could zone the lighting. please explain zoning requirements etc.

Only day time operation. at night we donot need lighting--but can reduce to minimum permissible but not completely dark.

i) Use Occupancy Sensors

ii) Use Lighting Energy Savers

iii) Re-check required illumination level

iv) Think of higher efficiency lighting and/or fittings

This is just one of many sites I googled for energy saving lamps.

Thanks

I am looking for Control of HID lamps as against Incandescent or Fluorescent lamps with a view to save energy. Like installing Dimmers, occupancy sensors etc as these lamps are difficult to control

It is easy to say to get rid of so many HID fixtures. Real challenge is to work around these fixtures and come with an engineering answer as any one can say get rid of existing and put new.

HID has its own advantages over other type of lighting and is not to be get rid off. Easy said than done.

Yes it is easy to say get rid of these fixtures. Obviously you don't do it all at once. The engineers job is to coordinate the replacement over a period of time. If you are interested in saving money, replacement is a good option.

What might that be?

It is so easy to get a GOOD Answer by increasing capital costs even over a period of time. The real challenge is to find by Dimming, using occupancy sensors or reducing the wattage in some zones--or by minimal capital costs.

Any Fluorescent light sales engineer can say that. But to arrive at a wiring diagram and solve it analytically and wisely requires a good lighting designer/ engineer.

Also, replacement over a period of time may not be cost effective. The designer will lose his job and the salesman will make money.

Suggestions like use of Hi bay sensors and reducing too much lighting where it is not needed. Also use of Daylighting where there are iarge doors/ windows can be thought of.

Wish i could get some such answers. For a Large storage even rearranging the stored material/ pallets can do the trick. Also in a vehicular garage, some other method can be adoptes.

Believe me, I am not the originator of this discussion; I would like to know more and also if there are full length windows and big entry doors. How many and if they are thru and thru for vehicle traffic, we can switch off lights near these doors during day time so artificial light can be used.

Let's look at such scenarios and not shut off the discussion by saying replace HID lights with FL.

Well, the spectrum of the light is one possible advantage; HID might give you a spectrum better for whatever task you may be performing. Cold temperature operation is another advantage.

for lighting load there will be special option in tariff(3 part tariff).Go for that and forget about lighting load think of power loads.

One should make a comparative study of HID,fluorescent,LED,CFL,SON etc considering the duration, initial cost, maintenance cost, wiring cost, energy bill etc and decide which is the best
