Exhaust Flue Pipe/Duct Sizing

10/02/2010 9:17 AM

HOW CAN WE CALCULATE THE EXHAUST FLUE PIPE/DUCT?

We have 3 MW X 3 Diesel Gensets , the Exhaust from each Diesel Genset(DG) is 19,492 kg/hr (23410 cu.ft/min) @ 450 DEG C , So from three DGS = 3*19492 KG/HR = 58476 KG/HR ( 3* 38984 = 116,952 cu.ft/min), This amount of Exhaust flue gas is passed thru ABSORPTION CHILLER FOR HEAT RECOVERY & the temp after passing thru chiller drops down from 450 to 160 deg C , With this 160 DEG Temp at the outlet of ABSORPTION CHILLERS , the weight FOR EXHAUST GAS being the same the mass flow rate @ 160DEG C becomes , 3*19492 KG/HR = 58476 KG/HR ( 3* 26129 = 78,387 cu.ft/min). I want to size the exhaust flue pipe/duct.

Can some body guide me how to do that , from where shall i get the material to refer.

I appreciate for any of the input.

Thank you very much

Mirza

There are many ways to find the answer online, piping calculators. If you want to know how concept, i guess you would need to steal the fluid book somewhere. I hope this help

Comparing the engine exhaust pipe diameter and the chiller intake gives you a starting point. If it were just 1 engine, 1 chiller I'd use the bigger of the 2. If it's 3 engines feeding 1 chiller, it's slightly more complcated, but you can still compare pipe areas.

Mr.Mirza, the Chiller Manufacturer gives his drawings which not only indicates sizes/dimensions but also location of diverting motorized valves and P & I Drawings of complete system. Suggest you get these from your Chiller suppliers.Any excess pressure drop due wrong sizing , both the generator & chiller manufacturers will put blame on you.Suggest you call engineers from both suppliers to discuss this.

You have to follow Mr. Ducon's suggestion. However to understand the theory of duct design you can refer any air conditioning text books .

Good morning Guest. If each DGS emits 23,410 cfm, the total for all 3 would be 70,230 cfm, not 116,952 cfm.

Actually that is 38984cfm mass flow @ density of 0.5 kg/m3 at 450 deg C at the outlet of DG for 19492 kg/hr weight, so for 3 DGS 3*38984 = 116952 CFM 7 NOT 70230 CFM. The 23,410 cfm is typo error. Thanks for that.

I have wanted to do things like this but never had the money.

One consideration I have always thought prudent would be to monitor the exhaust gas back-pressure as changes are made.

By using inducer fans and pressurizing the exhaust, or exhaust fans and creating a negative pressure, I would think it wise to maintain the same back-pressure as the manufacturer sent the machine out the door with.
