Bearing Case Cooling

10/02/2010 10:40 PM

i have a overhung pump which has water cooled bearing case water jacket is at bottom side to cool the oil only coupling side bearing is 5313ANR impeler side bearing is 6214 when we install this bearing houising temprature of in board{coupling side} bearing rises upto 85 degree c o/b bearing temp remains on 60 degree c can we apply the air on bearing case to cool the bearing?

If I understand you correctly, the oil level for the bearing housing should be high enough that both bearings are riding in the oil. The water would circulate through tubing in the bottom of the bearing case. If this is how your pump housing is set up, and your bearings are still that hot, and that different in temperature, you have too much load, or poor alignment. Good luck.

my dear thanks at the bottom there is space {jacket} for cooling water water in is near to in/b bearing and water out is near out/b bearing there orignal inlet conection is 3/4 npt we reduced it 1/2 inch tubing origanal out let is 3/4 inch npt we also reduce it to 1/2 inch tubing is this change could cause of temprature rise oil level is ok allign ment is also ok pump is pumping K corbonte solution which inlet temprature 85 c pump suction stainer is near the suction eye there is no straight run for th pump suction next i will send you its picture

How much power is being transmitted through this bearing? What is the size of this bearing in inches etc?Bearings make some heat by friction, even with proper surfaces and oil. So if you are sending 500 hp through this, it might make some heat.

The coupling side bearing is normally the thrust bearing. Has the pump been rebuilt? A change in the impeller can change the thrust load on the bearing. What is the oil level? To high of oil level can result in oil foaming, causing loss of lubrication or heat transfer. Is the oil slinger inplace? If not there maybe inadequate lubrication. Is the bearing coverplate gasket installed correctly? If the oil return holes are blocked there would not be adequate oil circulation. And yes a shaft mounted fan can help.

Depending on the water quality, you might have a scale build up that is blocking heat transfer to the water. If that is the case, you might be able to circulate sulfamic acid to remove the scale.

Also with the 3/4" connections being reduced to 1/2" are you sure that enough water is flowing through the housing? Have you been able to measure water temperatures into and out of the bearing housing?
