Hard Drive Space Reduced After Uninstalling Programs

10/03/2010 12:06 PM

I have sony vaio FZ with lots of additional software. I downloaded sony 'application uninstalled utility' and uninstalled a lot of unnecessary trial offers etc. After few hours I checked that the hard drive space is actually reduced! why is that? I can only guess that it could be because of system restore utility. But everyone on other forums mentioned that the free hard drive space increases. Am I missing any step?

It's possible probable that the uninstall utility actually takes up more space than the items you deleted.

After installing the utility, and then unistalling some programs i thought i should check hard drive free space for comparison. at that time it was 191 GB. In the end it was 189GB. Strange thing is I have a old XP laptop with only 4.xx GB free space. I decided to uninstall all unnecessary software I had installed over years. In the end the free hard drive space was 3.xx

That does seem strange. Did you try running disk clean or defragmenting the hard drive?

First: Empty the recycle bin. When anything is deleted it goes to the recycle bin, and uses up just as much disk space as before.

Second: If you know the files/programs that were deleted, you may need to delete them in the "Program Files" folder. Even after uninstalling a program, most uninstallers simply leave the files where they were in the "Program Files" folder. Laziness on the part of software companies I suppose. Then empty the recycle bin again.

Third: Are you sure that this sony 'application uninstalled utility' is genuine, that it doesn't carry a virus? Was it a free download? Did it come from the Sony site?

Recycle bin was empty. Yes there are still many folders like AOL,AIM in program files folder. I will delete them I checked the system restore points. Every time i uninstalled a program, a new restore point was created. I have 33 new restore points created today. Can restore points take up so much space? I guess i will have to just delete a couple of restore points to find out. I will look up online if restore points can be deleted.. but if anyone knows about it, let me know.

Get CCleaner :http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

It's free and does a good job of getting rid of junk.

It is possible that your system is configured in such a way that every time a software is installed or deleted (un-installed), a new backup copy is generated! A built-in system redundancy mechanism kind of thing as a fall back tool, if in case the user encounter a change of heart or made a mistake and deleted some needed files.

To regain all anticipated memory space, you need to do a new back up for your system, then delete all of the old backup copies except the latest dated file. Taking note of the dates when files are created! You can also run and search for duplicate files, since some systems are automatically creating duplicate files and storing them in separate directories. Then wipe up the memory to completely removed /clean your drive.

Have you defragged after all this?

Actually it is a complex way to determine actual space.

Have a detailed study of Sectors & etc

to have insight of hard disk

There are bugs and viruses that can lurk in System Restore, avoiding virus programs. Make sure you have saved important stuff on cds or dvds and then remove and re-install System Restore. This gets rid of everything hiding there. You may need the Windows install disk to re-install System Restore, look it up before you do anything.
