Large Rail System Information Needed

10/07/2010 2:22 PM

I am designing concepts for a rotating platform that will support heavy loads as part of an assembly process. The disc shaped platform will be about 4 meters in diameter, oriented parallel to the ground, and the supported load will be as high as 30,000 kg.

I am considering a circular rail system around the perimeter of the disc to support it and allow low friction rotation. I cannot support the disc near its center. Can anyone suggest suppliers of (circular) rails, rollers, etc. for loads of this scale?

As long as you have an axle to keep the disk centered, just put as many standard dolly wheels as you can fit around the edge. Any strong flat surface will support them. Fifteen wheels would only have to support 2000 kg each.

I don't see any railing like I visualize you want but this popped up in a search. Might be an idea in there.

I hate to say this but the Victorians did it long before you. I can't see much you can do to alter the railway turntable. Properly centred one man could manually turn a 100 Ton loco.

I should have specified that space at the center of disc is occupied - no central axis or support.

Since posting I have discovered the "slewing ring" and I think it will do the trick.

Thanks for your advice.

slewing ring ???

Is that a bunch of lawyers? Sorry, my spelling sucks.

If you can bend a steel rod in the round shape required, you could attach steel wheels with a V groove in them. Then the disc would just roll around the fabricated steel ring. Good luck.

Maybe think in terms of a super-sized lazy susan?
