Check Engine indication

10/08/2010 11:59 AM

Dear All, I owned a TATA INDIGO GLS Petrol in which there is a display of CHECK ENGINE at dashboard but car is running smoothly & trouble free. One of the mechanic suggested me to replace ECU/ECM unit or repair it. The make of ECU unit is SAGEM Can any one suggest me a exact solution?

I am not versed on the Tata, but almost every new car I have seen has a data port to read the vehicle fault codes.

If the check engine light is lit, then take it to the dealer and have them read the codes with their scanner. The codes will tell you want is actually wrong.

I agree with anonymous hero and the cost to have the codes read has most certainly got to be less expensive than replacing the ECU/ECM.

I agree with AH anf KJK/USA. This mechanic who suggested replacing the ECU (one of the more expensive components that seldom fails): did he hook it up and get the trouble code, or simply suggest the remedy?

It may be as simple as a timing belt tension problem... the trouble code will reveal (as the name implies) the real trouble.
