The Real Hero of the Chilean Mine Rescue

10/14/2010 2:27 AM

The one person in the saga of the Chilean mine rescue that deserves all of the highest accolades we could possibly shower on him is Luis Urzua, the team leader of the trapped miners. Imagine, if you can, the leadership skills required to maintain order and the spirit of hope among a group of 33 desperate men trapped in a dark cavern for 69 days, with limited food and water and communication with the outside world. This is the sort of Hero we should all aspire to emulate. The name Luis Urzua should be in everyone's thoughts and prayers of thanksgiving.

While I agree with the leadership shown by Luis Urzua, and while I had my heart in my mouth thinking of all the possible things that could go wrong, the person that showed most courage and faith in the system, to me was the first rescue miner to go down in the capsule, and of course there are all those unsung heroes in the background. My thougts are with them all, a job well done.

Regards JD.

That's an amazing story. I was watching on the news last night. He had only worked for the mine for 2 months and wasn't in charge before the cave in. If he hadn't kept insanity at bay, things could have been much worse. He was able to keep everyone down there focused. A real hero for sure.

Agreed. Some people are natural leaders and may never realize it until they are in such a situation. I think all of the miners deserve a big hand for enduring this ordeal.

I posted this in another thread on the topic, but seems appropriate here, too.

Those miners were real heroes, but I also wanta put in a plug for some good engineering. Center Rock took their experience from Quecreek (In fact, one of the Quecreek miners now works for Center Rock) and developed their LP drill that got the job done in Chile. This was sort of a case of one miner passing along his miracle to the next group. Miners in general have a whole lot more cohones than most of us.
