I would imagine, the same way it's done in an automobile. Or anything else that can't be grounded to earth.

If we compare the aeroplane to a car, there's going to be an awful tangle of anti-static straps around the globe.

We probably should be using them at gas pumps for the same reason as airplanes, to prevent static charge (spark) from detonating fuel vapor. These fires happen quite frequently while people are filling up cars. You almost made a good point guest.

For commercial airplanes a grounding cable is attached to the plane when it is on the ground. I think all airplanes are grounded before being refueled to avoid a spark that could start a fire.

Once the plane is in the air the metal skin acts as a Faraday Cage. The electronic devices are grounded to each other and to the airplane chassis.

I agree with your post.

However, one of the largest areas of misunderstanding in the electrical field today is the difference between an object being "bonded" and being "grounded".

You said...

"Once the plane is in the air the metal skin acts as a Faraday Cage. The electronic devices are grounded to each other and to the airplane chassis".

It might have been better to have said that the "electronic devices are bonded to each other and to the airplane chassis".

Please don't think I am being overly anal, this concept of "bonding" versus "grounding" is something that really needs to be communicated much more to increase the general understanding of the differences inherent in the core concepts.

Aircraft are "bonded" to "ground" and to the other portions of the fueling chain during the fueling process. The purpose of this is to ensure that one equipotential ground plane is formed so that no potential difference may be present anywhere in the system. The fuel rushing through the pipes and hoses of the fueling system generate a fair amount of static chagre. Bonding everything together ensures no chance of that static potential from ever raising to the point of generating a spark as the static charge is essentialy bled off to ground.

As to the on board systems... the chassis of all of the systems are all bonded to each other, to the electrical supplies and to the skin and frame of the aircraft.

Tyres like those on cars dissipate static, they contain quantity's of graphite or carbon to allow for this, also most real planes have AC 400 HZ system to allow for smaller lighter inductive components. 28 volt D.C systems are for very small plane with minimal electrical devices. As well as generating from the jet engine some planes have an additional jet engine (auxiliary power unit) for additional power and what can be termed a RAT Ram Air Turbine which is an up sh&t creek device to prevent all your on board vital communication and functional electrics from power failure due to complete engine failure. These systems would have a neutral point in the generation system to ground and bond items, which itself would be connected to any metal work of the plane. All fuel system and tanker or any item where insulating material are moving at speed through a system should be grounded to earth to prevent ignition of source or injury.

Hiya, gust.

If you want a sreious answer to your areonautical questions, spose you better go to aerospaceweb.org and go there ask page for a complete solution to your problem as you can ask them if you can't find the info you require.
