Coconut Sugar Manufacturers

10/15/2010 9:51 AM

I am interested in importing and distributing coconut sugar and oil in Western Europe, and is looking for the best offers - lowest price and good quality.

If you are a manufacturer or know any manufacturers - please do not hesitate to give me your offer/bid or share your information.

Lana,

You have to go to your government to see what country they are allowing to bring in coconut sugar. Here in the USA we can get a list of countries who are permitted to trade with us in specific products. Then we contact that country for a list of suppliers within that country. Using that list you will have to make the deals.

Keep in mind that you will now be competing with others in getting coconut sugar. Your first buy will always be higher than you expect. This is due to having to out bid their current buyer. If you are lucky enough to get a supplier who can increase his supply you might get a better deal. But most likely you will have to wait till next year when the demand causes more to be produced.

Make sure you escrow your money in a reputable bank to keep all players honest. Importing food products is also a tricky business. It must meet government standards and be free of insects and other contaminates, certain pesticides and herbicides. You have to do your homework. Even improper shipping could damage your product and you could loose big. And always remember, politics can play a major role in this process, both good and bad.

Depending on the company you are buying from, and the country they are located, the supply might not be there next time or even be open for you to do business with. Make sure there is a good history between your country and the suppling country and that the supplier within that country is reputable.

Good luck and send me a sample when you get going.

Dear rcf-jr

Thank you for your advice. I will definitely check it. My plan is to import it from the Philippines, however their prices are quite high in comparison to Thailand. I don't know if it has something to do with quality or the Philippines simply is charging an over price. If you have experience within the industry, please do not hesitate to share :)

@ pnaban - thank you. I will try.

As I understood from some soil science professors from Europe, Belgium actually, importation of sugar is severely taxed to protect local sugar beet growers. You may want to check on the importation taxes with the local governments. European taxes tend to be pretty severe anyways, but in order to make sugar beets grown locally at such northern latitudes competitive they have to be extremely high.

How is that relevent? Purified sugar is sucrose with small amounts of impurities (HFCS is fructose and glucose with very minimal impurities). If you are importing a product sold as sugar, it will be taxed as sugar. If it is a specialty product, well it might be taxed differently, but that could well be a higher tax rate than the sugar tarriffs. Now if you are selling it as a healthier alternative to Sugar, simple sucrose, then it best not contain any substantial amount of sucrose. Plus you could hit a legal barrier to importation in europe unless the product is researched for any qualities you might claim.
