Making Technology or Designs in the Field of Renewable Energy Open Source

Maybe in a perfect world. Without the potential for profit, I doubt many will be interested in investing time or money into such a venture.

If you came up with a wind or hydro generating design that worked far better than anything else on the planet, would you just throw it out there for anyone to copy and use? If the answer is yes, I'm afraid you are part of a very small minority. I wouldn't. I would be looking to be rewarded for my hard work, time and money invested.......Of course, I'm a free market capitalist.

If Eric Raymond-open source advocate, would have thought in the same way as you do, they open source would would not be the same as it is today. As the purpose is noble and the need for today I would say making the designs open source in the field of renewable energy will enhance development and research which is the need of today.

Open source what? Software? It's this kind of thinking that will hobble true innovation. This perpetual notion that it's wrong to look out for yourself,make money and be happy, treat others as you want to be treated.....will lead to our ultimate demise. Socialism doesn't work dammit, it's been proven over and over again.

By the way, when you come up with the ultimate "green" technology, send me the plans. I promise I won't make any money from it.

In simple plain words who pays for the projects ? Do not underestimate the complexity of such systems if they have to be more than a toy.

Yes i totally understand the complexity of the systems and we in INDIA have started a movement to make this happen.

A good 3rd world solution - holding a hand out for freebies that others have paid for.

Others call it peasant socialism.

What to do about:

New wind turbines development costs?

New PV cell development costs?

Biofuel development cost?

Many other new developments as well.

by Development cost you mean manufacturing lines, and set up cost. I suppose the investors will put their money to do the same. and if u mean designs development cost right now I am also not sure how will the designers get money, may be they will royalty according to their contribution.

Nobody is perfect! Something good comes out once in a while no matter how hard any government organization tries to screw up!

Is open source the same as free?

From what I've read it isn't. Maybe wrong though.
