Hi Guest, although per ASME Code is not mandatory include a manhole or a hanhole in the design of an equipment, sometimes is recommendable include it for inspection activities, specially whether the service or fluid to be used is dirty, or corrosive, or there are many solids in suspension during the working or process, but whether the service where the equipment to be used is clean, then you have not to include it.

Best regards,

Arrow is correct. In addition to the above mentioned reasons, depending on the country in which the vessel will be used, the governing laws may require periodic visual inspection, which means using mirrors, magnifying glasses, lights, or if the vessel is too small for a man to fully enter, a means of using a boroscope. This is the case in the country where I work. The inspection is manual and radiographic or ultrasonic inspection are not allowed to be substituted for this type of inspection method.

As for your vessel, the size you mentioned would probably require a inspection manway located in the midpoint of the vessel, thus allowing for easier access to both ends of the vessel.

Remember all countries have different regulations concerning the inspection of vessels, so a little research can save a significant amount of time and anguish.

So, to summarize, ask the client where it will be used, in addition to what type of media will pass through it. Take a little time to develop a list of other questions that will impact your design.

For any pressure vessel bearing the U stamp that has an inside diameter over 36-inches and without a manhole, it must have at least two 6-inch pipe size nozzles for inspection. These opening should be located so that the entire interior of the vessel can be visually inspected for corrosion. Reference ASME Section VIII, UG-46. If the vessel is under air service and also contains other substances that will prevent corrosion, smaller openings can be used if they are equivalent in size and number to the requirements of UG-46(c) and allow for convenient inspection. In some instances if the vessel is provided with teltale holes (one hole minimum per 10 sq. ft.) and is subject only to corrosion and is not in compressed air service, the larger inspection opening may not be required (UG-25).

Depending on the service of the vessel, it may require inspection and the client should be aware of that. If the vessel requires an inspection opening and the client still doesn't want the opening, then he should provide you with a waiver in writing to cover you in the event of problems down the road.

Provision for Inspection on a pressure Vessel is a requirement, Manholes or Inspection Nozzles are provided to serve this purpose. Secondly if the client asks for, it becomes the responsibility of the designer/fabricator to provide. Location and accessbility to the Manhole / inspection nozzle should be decided depending on the configuration of the final setting (Vertical or Horizontal) of the vessel.
