DNA Testing of "Sasquatch" Hair

07/26/2005 3:18 PM

The University of Alberta will be testing samples of "sasquatch" hair from Teslin in the Yukon to see if the DNA matches any of the known large animals. Says David Coltman, a wildlife geneticist at Alberta "So we'll compare it to all of that, and if it doesn't match anything, then it's potentially interesting." Coltman believes the hair is form a Yukon bison.

Update: Sorry folks, the hair was from a bison.

The funny thing is that they think it is a Bison. Not sure how you can confuse a big cow with a humanoid biped.
They also said it was like Forestry CSI, sounds like a new show.

I'm not sure confusion is implied. The situation is probably one of the following (if it is indeed bison hair):

1) Locals found the bison hair - maybe near a tree where the bison scratched an itch - and earnestly believe it is sasquatch hair.
2) Locals found the bison hair and are attempting to pass it off as sasquatch hair for publicity.

I don't think anyone saw a bison and said - "yup that's a sasquatch. Unless prodigious amounts of alcohol were involved. Then, just about anything could be a saquatch.

I see, they found it near where they found the footprints (no big news on those yet) and assumed it came from what they saw.
Not sure I want them to find if it is an unknown creature or not, the world needs a little mystery.

Interesting. Unlike photographs (which can be digitally manipulated), DNA testing is seen as truth writ in stone.

Not really DNA will just say that it something that is not indigenous to the area. If they submit it to a larger lab to go against a battery of test vs. EVERY known mammal that it will become interesting.
