Plate Material for Flanges

10/19/2010 4:14 AM

Why don't we use plate material (like IS 2062) for making flanges? Why only forged one like A 105. I went through posts where bit of differentiation was there between IS 2062 & A 105 but didn't make to the reply. Both materials are having same yield strength and tensile strength. Then where lies the difference between application?? Thanx in adv.

Forged flanges do have better grain structure than machined flanges out of plate...

Plate Materials are used to fabricate materials having even geometry ( eg Spectacle Plate from A 36) . Since the Flanges are basically prepared by forging process hence the have been designated for use by Forging Grade Materials like A 105 , A 182 F 316.

Anoop...

Follow the code of record for the piping system.

Specifically, what is the code of record ?

What is the design temperatures and pressures of the system ?

You cannot use any material you like for a system. Both ASME and PED power/process piping codes contain restrictions on the usage and application of materials for flanges.

Tell us more....

Depends on the usage. I have had many flanges made of 2062 (A36) plate when I worked there.

If pressure and temp do not pose a problem then it is a function of economics. Making a flange is time consuming when you only do a few.
