De-rectified Automobile Alternator

10/19/2010 10:33 AM

How does one go about removing the diode bridge in an Alternator so the alternator can produce Alternating current only.

How will removing the diode bridge affect the Alternators performance.

This is going from memory, you should be able to get 100V 3Ph. But remember you've got to have DC excitation voltage to the slip rings.
We did it as an apprentices over 30 years ago. Two of us built a mini power station using 3 x 12V DC dynamos to drive 3 butchered alternators to learn how synchronisation worked.

Tony

The OP is asking about an auto alternator. I would assume 12 volts. How do you get 100 volts 3 phase out of it?

As I said I'm going from memory, for our little power station experiment we used 24V alternators because that's what we had in stores. The OC voltage is well above what you would expect.
