How to Connect a Dryer With 30 Amps 4 Wire Plugs in a 240v Region?

10/19/2010 2:24 PM

Hi .. I have a Dryer that reads 30A 125/250V that I need to take to India and connect in a system where home power supply is :- 240v. My question is, this has 4 pins. 1 ground 2 hot-s (red, black) and 1 white netural. Is this done with 2 hot-s only to get 240v from a 120v home supply? If so, Do I need the 2 hot pins for the home wiring that has 220v supply? I know, that in US homes 2 120v with a phase difference is put-together to make a 220v.. I hope I've made myself clear, can anyone please answer my (possibly dumb) question!? Thanks CuriousJack

The heating element runs at 240v, but the motor and timer probably run at 120v, which is why the neutral is there. On the India system, I think you would need a 240 x 120 transformer with enough va to supply the motor and timer.

Ok.. if there is anything in the appliance that needs 120v, should'nt it be specified in the Manual or Specs!? I cannot find any .... Weird, I thought I could just take it back and connect a neutral instead of either Black or Red wire which would give 240 v and it would work fine. Thx

Your original spec said 30a, 125/250v; and called out a neutral (white) wire. That suggests some 125v item(s) within the dryer.

Does the manual have a wiring diagram? If so, look carefully where the motor and timer are hooked up.

(The 125/250v designation looks like something written on the plug rather than on the appliance. ??)

Why on earth would you pay to ship a large appliance to India? Do they not exist there?

Chances are, you will smoke it in short order. It's not just a different voltage and pin out, that's the least problem. The frequency is different. The motor will run faster and hotter, it will have a drastically reduced life. The power supplies for any electronics (assuming it is new enough to have electronic controls) will be designed for 60Hz, it too will have problems with 50Hz and most likely die prematurely. Parts for it will have to come from wherever you bought it.

So in the end you will have paid for this expensive shipping to get an appliance that will probably be dead and unrepairable in under a year. You may want to reconsider.

I give you a good answer for bringing up the frequency and the motor running hotter. However in my opinion the motor will run 20% slower, if 50 Hz is applied there and the dryer is 60 Hz.

Oops, right. I just dealt with the exact opposite situation with someone else, importing a large appliance from Europe.

A. You need to know if the elements can be configured star or delta.

A delta configuration on 220/240 between phases can be reconfigured to star on 240 (/ 415). This then creates a 'false neutral' at 240 potential - so no 120 v source if such is required for a motor. However, some motors are also reconfigurable from 120 to 240, by series connection of paralleled windings.

So, B. You need to know if the motor has a 240 v option.

(the difference in the motor speed (50/60 Hz) is largely irrelevant in this sort of appliance)

Or; basically; get the wiring diagram for the 240/415 configuration - or leave it at home.

But I think you will find India has a range of quite good white goods readily and 'affordably' available.

"(the difference in the motor speed (50/60 Hz) is largely irrelevant in this sort of appliance)"

It's not just the speed. The motor is designed for a specific V/Hz ratio, 240V/60Hz or 4 V/Hz. If you change the Hz, you must change the Volts proportionately. So if you CAN live with the 20% slower speed (got that right this time), you will have to lower the voltage by 20% as well, otherwise you will be running the motor windings in a constant state of saturation and they will burn up. So being that it was designed for 240V 60Hz, to avoid smoking the motor the Voltage at 50Hz would need to be dropped to 200V. But now the motor will also be putting out 20% less HP, something else to consider when running a drum full of wet clothes.

Delta or Wye??? it's not going to be a 3 phase dryer! We don't have 3 phase supplied to residential consumers here in North America.

"Delta or Wye??? it's not going to be a 3 phase dryer! We don't have 3 phase supplied to residential consumers here in North America."

What just 2? How 3rd world - You'd think you would entertain such an advancement - just to cut back a bit on the copper tonnage 120 demands?

So what do you do with the 3rd one?

But given 2 x 120 v elements in series across 240, the center tap is conveniently 120 V You could may be also balance out the Ohmic tolerance

(And I think you are over training on 'saturation' in this HP and class of motor)

(bit like the OP is, freighting an appliance back to the Continent of origin)

I guess you are talking about a clothes dryer, a local Indian company called Tata, they make cars, refrigerators, washing machine and clothes dryers, you can even get American appliances in some parts of Indian made for the Indian market.

I am from India, we have good sunshine here to dry the clothes. We do not use energy for drying the clothes. We have spin dryers in washing machines such as Whirlpool,LG.Samsung,Siemens etc. So we need only one voltage 220 Volts and only three point plugs.

(but not entirely true about the one voltage)

Welcome to India!

Leave the baggage there it will save you lot of headaches and money. The saved money will provide you with plenty of options here all designed for the existing rating of supply.

Anyluck with your project. I'm planning to bring my Whirlpool dryer WED9050XW which also requires 240V 30 amps and 60hz. Please can you call me at 732 398 8594 or India number 9445513130.

Thanks
Ganesh.
